Contemporary Art in Lisbon
4-day tour in Lisbon
We provide personalised programmes boasting visits to galleries and encounters with curators and leading figures in Lisbon’s thriving contemporary art scene. These tailored tours give a vivid insight into an artistic world as attractive and original as it is alive.
Ours will be a voyage of discovery through an array of the most interesting artists living and working in Portugal. Alongside visits to landmark museums and collections, our tour will introduce us to selected galleries, private collections, artist studios and temporary exhibitions.
Our itinerary is constantly updated to take in the latest developments in the Lisbon arts world and, at the same time, provides a perfect introduction to a city with a unique character, fascinating neighbourhoods and, as we shall see, the most intimate of art scenes.
Program
The first day begins with a walk through the historic Chiado district, where we move among atmospheric cafés and enticing book, fashion and design stores, all set against the backdrop of a striking contemporary restoration project by leading Portuguese architect A. Siza Vieira. Here, too, the Museu do Chiado is well worth a visit. A few steps away, the hugely atmospheric and vibrant Bairro Alto district is home to some of the city’s leading galleries, with their curators awaiting our arrival.
The morning of our second day is dedicated to the largest collection of contemporary art in the country, at the thoroughly modern Belém Cultural Centre. After this, we visit the imposing monument to the Portuguese era of discoveries, with its fabulous views over what is acclaimed by artists as the most luminous river in Europe.
In the afternoon, there is a unique opportunity to explore a fascinating photography collection that has yet to be opened to the public. Our route then takes us through the heritage of the city’s industrial past, where warehouses are being turned into art galleries and numerous other creative spaces are blossoming into new life.
Our third day begins with an invitation to view another private collection, this time dedicated to the latest in international art and located on the very outskirts of the city. In the afternoon, we return to the heart of Lisbon’s artistic community to enjoy private collections whose doors are opened exclusively for us. Further insight into artistic life here is provided by visits to the studios of a few carefully selected artists.
On our final day, before departure, we get to know the original beacon of contemporary art in Lisbon – the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. We make the most of a special visit that enables us to appreciate not only the building’s notable architecture and gardens, but also the foundation’s magnificent collection of art.
