Estremoz wine route
4-day tour departing from Lisbon
Estremoz is a very special wine producing area in Alentejo, a land of wine and art. Our journey is all about the experience of learning the art of wine making according to the region’s long-preserved traditional methods.
All this, plus exploring a rich historical heritage and staying in a landmark castle will ensure that we taste the authentic spirit of a fascinating place.
Alentejo, a vast territory south of Lisbon, and one of Europe`s most southern lands, is seen by many as a lost paradise of space and stillness. It`s a unique region of preserved landscapes and heritage. We will make a discover journey through the originality of its artistic expressions, among them the art of making wine. And that`s how our journey starts, travelling across extraordinary plains, visiting towns and villages, stopping at wineries rich with stories to be told.
Program
Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is our first stop. At the 16th-century Convento dos Loios, today transformed into a Pousada, we will have the privilege of resting in old monk cells in an authentic monastic atmosphere. The following morning we`ll take a walk through this fascinating city, guardian to precious testaments of the Portuguese Renaissance. Later, we`ll start to discover its regional wines and will learn to recognize the aromas of each variety. Nor should we forget that gastronomy, too, is an art of great refinement, as interpreted by the cooks in traditional taverns, serving their petiscos and delicious regional dishes.
Estremoz, our next stop, has given its name to grand terroir, where the exceptional wines are the result of traditional methods allied to new technologies. Here, yet another choice place to spend the night awaits us. This time, our pousada is the old palace built by King D. Dinis at the end of the 12th century for his famous queen, Santa Isabel de Aragão.
On our third day, we will pay a visit Vila Viçosa, the palace of the dukes of Bragança, future kings of Portugal. The length of its rooms are packed with the entangled threads of a hugely rich past of art and history. And while retracing the lives of kings and queens, we come upon wine once again: this time in a delightful baroque estate, the gift of a monarch to his mistress, now the name of the estate`s famous wine.
We finish our journey along Estremoz route with a visit to the region`s oldest winery, where wine-making has been elevated to the highest form of art since 1901. Here, we will still have time for a walk around the vineyards, where the secret story behind the label of each bottle begins. The dominant variety is Alicante Bouschet, introduced to this region more than 100 years ago with outstanding results.
On our way back, the village of Evoramonte awaits us, with its imposing castle dominating the plains of Alentejo, and the mysterious, prehistoric remains of standing stones, witness even today to an ancient and mythical civilization.
